Sustainable science and engineering for the global community

The Team

DIRECTOR

Richard Novak is a fourth-year graduate student in Bioengineering at UCSF and UC Berkeley working in the Mathies Group on single cell analysis. He received a B.S. in Biology from Emory University in 2007, where he played with flies and developed techniques for analyzing parasite dispersal. Richard founded Future Scientist to provide students in resource-poor areas with the encouragement and resources to fully experience the world we live in.

EDUCATION COORDINATOR

Gautham Venugopalan is a graduate student in the UC-Berkeley/SF Joint Graduate Group in Bioengineering researching cell mechanics in the Fletcher Lab. He has been working with elementary school students through the Community in the Classroom program for two years and is on the steering committee.

ENGINEERING COORDINATOR

Frances Bell graduated from Smith College in Massachusetts with a B.S. in Engineering Science. She now lives in the San Francisco Bay area working as an electrical engineer at Bechtel Corp. in Oakland, CA designing cabling for a nuclear waste treatment plant located in Washington. Frances is an active member of Engineers Without Borders Appropriate Technologies Design Team and is pursuing sustainable design education as a career.

MEDICAL COORDINATOR

Tyson Kim is a graduate student in UCSF/UCB Bioengineering and a medical student at UCSF. He works in the Rong Wang Group where he grows blood vessels. He received a B.S. in Physics from UCSD and has worked with Habitat for Humanity, the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic, and UCSF REMEDY - a student organization dedicated to bridging health disparities abroad. Tyson is a geek and likes good causes.
