Medical Boat Trip on the Orosa River

Frances and Brigitte spent 10 days traveling with a group of medical students and doctors on the Ninita, one of the Project Amazonas boats. They went up the Orosa River as part of an intensive needs assessment to find out what Future Scientist can do to help the jungle communities and how best to go about it. Here are some of their adventures in photos. To read more about their experiences and find out about what they plan to do next, visit their Biodigester Project Blog.

Frances relaxing on the Ninita as we chug down the Amazon toward the Orosa River.

View from the front of the boat. This was our favorite place to hang out cause it had the best views and great breeze to keep both the heat and bugs away!

We visited a riverside distillery along the way.

Mmmm. Booze.

Aguardiente distillery...aka moonshine made out of sugarcane.

Molasses on a cracker. So good!

Star fruit!

Small village nearby.

This little boy stole my heart for a moment. He was walking down the sidewalk behind me dragging his oversized flip flops, singing, and flying his boat through the air. As soon as I turned around to take a picture he tried to hide behind his boat. His name is Danielo.

A table cloth hanging out to dry.

There's a slight hint of a rainbow in this picture.

The school where the docs saw patients.

The patients gathered.

Temporary pharmacy. Christian had it under control.

Devon attending to a family. Notice the fancy dress the baby has on!

People waiting and watching.

More waiting.

This one cracks me up. The little girl jumped into pictures because she wanted to see herself in photos.

Hermanos.

Sunset.

We felt that there is much we can do to help. All the more motivation to get the biogas digesters up and running!
