Useful Trash: Smith College Design Clinic collaboration
Future Scientist is excited to be working with a talented team of engineers at Smith College to design a practical solution to the buildup of plastic and other non-degradable trash around Portobelo and other parts of Panama. The team is implementing the engineering design approach to find a useful and scalable product as part of their year-long Design Clinic course. They visited Portobelo in January for on-location assessment of their prototypes and design iteration with significant input from community members.
If you are interested in supporting this project, please help us fund materials for prototype construction by a tax-deductible donation to Future Scientist.

The Design Team
Adrienne Horne (right) is currently a senior at Smith College where she studies engineering with a focus on power systems and is an avid member of the lacrosse team. From a small town in Maine, she spent her junior year studying abroad at Tsinghua University in China. She plans to begin a graduate degree in energy management engineering next fall.
Lawren Gamble (‘14, left) is an engineering student at Smith College interested in energy efficiency and fluid dynamics. She hopes to pursue a graduate degree in engineering aerodynamics with a focus on biomimicry. Originally from Alameda, CA she hopes to return to the San Francisco Bay Area upon graduation. On the side she plays jazz flute and enjoys rock climbing.
Raisa Rubin (middle) is a senior year at Smith College. She is interested in mechanical engineering and design. She has been working with PEM fuel cells for the past year designing a fuel cell system and working on a bipolar plate design. She loves to hike, bike, and rock climb.
