sponsor virginia's sustainable project design program

Picture
I am a sophomore Integrative Biology major with a Chicano Studies minor at UC Berkeley. Please help me reach my funding goal to enable me to travel to Portobelo, Panama to redesign and repair broken water tanks that supply the community, add a chlorination system, work with the local community and school to develop ways to increase awareness of water health issues and designing ways to make the improvements sustainable.

Any donation you provide will go directly toward program costs and excess donations will go toward travel expenses.

“Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

Thank You! - Virginia Urzua

about the sustainable project design program: panama

The goal of SPDP: Panama is an intensive program designed to teach motivated students how to effectively make a significant positive impact through engineering design and technical training.  During 9 intense days, each participant will learn and put into action every part of the engineering design process, from initial needs assessments to the final user training.  Future Scientist provides students of all backgrounds with a fundamental understanding of developing practical and appropriate projects that will make a lasting difference.

Participants will receive an introduction to the culture, language, and ecology of Panama and then travel to the town of Portobelo where they will repair a sedimentation tank and adding a chlorination module to the water supply.  Training local high school students in tank operation and maintenance using hands-on activities will provide project sustainability.  Throughout the project, teams of students will each perform a needs assessment, identify several potential engineering or education solutions to address one specific problem, and propose a final project design and training lesson that may be funded for future implementation.

Future Scientist is a non-profit organization founded by science and engineering graduate students as a way to make an impact through technical training.  Read more about us here.
