Clean Water Access Initiative
PROVIDING ACCESS TO SAFE DRINKING WATER
We are focusing heavily on bringing clean water to the Portobelo district. Our successful chlorination kit outreach project is being scaled up to provide access to chlorinated water at the point of use. Our charlas, or community education programs, and distributed chlorination kits have reached more than 500 individuals. We work closely with the Portobelo colegio (high school) to train students to conduct outreach programs, distribute kits, and collect critical data to measure our impact on reducing waterborne disease. Instructions for our chlorination kits can be found on our Resources page.
We are also improving maintenance efforts for local dams and aqueducts to minimize risk of running out of water during the dry season. We are developing this into a program that, in parallel with chlorination kit distribution and outreach, will improve access to clean water year-round. To promote long-term maintenance and expansion of these programs, we are developing ties to the local water and health ministries as well as working closely with regional clinics to expand the reach of our reducation programs.
This effort is already having an impact! The dam we built with the school withstood torrential rains and flooding and enabled the school to remain open by being one of the few sites in Portobelo with running water. Read more in our blog.
